Tibetan man is first self-immolation protestor of 2013

Saturday, 12 January 2013

The first confirmed Tibetan self-immolation protest of 2013 took place at 1pm today (local time) in Achok Township, Sangchu County, Kanlho Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Eastern Tibet (1). Tsebe (2), a layman from a nearby village, is thought to have died at the scene.

He is believed to have been in his early 20s. Following the protest local people carried his body back to his home village which is around 3-4km away.

Free Tibet Director Stephanie Brigden said:

“Today's events demonstrate that Tibetan rejection of the Chinese occupation is as strong as ever. The new Chinese leadership and the international community cannot allow demands for freedom to continue to go unheeded. 2013 must be the year where positive change comes to Tibet.”

Sangchu County was a centre of Tibetan protest last year and a number of Tibetans set themselves on fire. More than 90 Tibetans have now self-immolated in protest against China's continuing occupation (3).
