Second Tibetan self-immolation in Sangchu County today

Friday, 26 October 2012

The second young man (1) to set fire to himself today in Tibet is 23-year-old Tsewang Kyab. He self-immolated between 8 and 9pm local time on the main street of Sangkog Township, Sangchu County (2).

Tsewang Kyab died at the scene. An eyewitness reported that people on the street first encircled him to prevent security personnel from taking away his body, and then carried the body back to his home in Sertri village.

There are reports of a heavy security presence in Sangkog Township.

Free Tibet Director Stephanie Brigden said:

“Tsewang Kyab is the second person in Sangchu County today to demonstrate his fierce rejection of Chinese rule, the fifth just this week in the county to die in a lone protest against China’s occupation.

“China’s policies in Tibet have failed utterly. The incoming Communist Party leaders must recognise that they must act on Tibetan demands for freedom.”
