Protesting Rebkong students threatened with expulsion

Wednesday, 20 October 2010

Officials in Rebkong have warned students that ringleaders will be expelled if protests against the use of Chinese as the main language in schools continue.

Free Tibet Director Stephanie Brigden said: “That school children should be threatened with the removal of their right to education simply for expressing their desire to study in their mother-tongue is unacceptable.”
The Governor and the Director General of the Education Department of Malho Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture visited the Teachers’ School of Malho Prefecture on the evening of 19 October. As well as threatening expulsions they told approximately 15 selected students that regulations making Chinese the main language in schools will not be implemented while they remain in office.

On 20 October classes resumed in the six schools that joined yesterday’s protests.
