Bjork calls for Tibetan independence at Shanghai concert

Free Tibet Campaign today salutes Bjork's courageous declaration of support for Tibet and the plight of its people at her concert in Shanghai on Sunday.

During her final song, "Declare Independence", which she dedicated to Tibet, the Icelandic singer called out "Tibet! Tibet!" before the lyric "Raise your flag." In the past, the singer has used this song to show her support for other national causes, including Kosovo, Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

Anne Holmes, acting director of Free Tibet Campaign, said:

"We are delighted with Bjork's refusal to be silenced on China's oppression of the Tibetan people. She's shown more courage than politicians like Gordon Brown and David Miliband, whose public silence on these issues during recent trips to China is a source of shame for the British people.'

"Bravo, Bjork for showing that public figures can and should use their presence in China to speak out against China's appalling human rights record in Tibet and throughout China."
