Massive gathering of Tibetan students

9th November 2012

Thousands gathered in a protest earlier today.

Between 4 and 5,000 young people marched through the streets of Rebkong. They brought traffic to a standstill.

The march stopped for a demonstration outside a local government compound.

Tibetan human rights

The protesters were demanding equality and language rights for Tibetans and the return of the Dalai Lama.

The Tibetan language is increasingly marginalised by Chinese authorities. Earlier this year, students in the same area protested after they discovered that their Tibetan textbooks had been replaced with Chinese ones.

Chinese armed military and police were deployed to two locations in the town but did not engage the protesters.

Protests in Tibet

This is the latest in a series of protests in the area.

An 18-year-old set himself on fire yesterday sparking a large demonstration which brought Chinese Paramilitary forces onto the streets.

Earlier this week, a 23-year-old mother also set herself on fire in protest against Chinese oppression in Tibet.

Both self-immolators died.

More than 60 Tibetans have now set themselves on fire in protest against the Chinese occupation of their country. Read the full list.
