The Dalai Lama made clear in a public statement on 26 September 2011 that he will maintain the integrity of his succession as Dalai Lama. His statement provides a graceful but firm counterpoint to Chinese Communist Party attempts to control the next incarnation of the Dalai Lama and so strengthen their hold over Tibet. He stated clearly that he will consult with Tibetans and Tibetan Buddhists, and that the Chinese Communist Party can have no sway whatsoever over his reincarnation, if indeed he decides to reincarnate. The Dalai Lama also raised the possibility that he may emanate rather than reincarnate, which would allow his successor to be recognised by the present Dalai Lama while he was still alive.
