Torture report 2008

Your funds enabled us to research torture in Tibet, and to submit a report to the United Nations Committee Against Torture in November. The United Nations agreed with the conclusions of our report, stating that torture is not only 'widespread' in Tibet, but 'routine'. It is hugely beneficial to Tibetans in Tibet that the truth about human rights abuses is known, and that influential bodies demand that China explains this worsening situation and takes steps to put it right.

On International Human Rights Day, Free Tibet launched 'The Tortured Truth', revealing the tragic reality of how China uses torture as a weapon to suppress the Tibetan people. Despite China's claims that torture is prohibited, Tortured Truth exposes how torture is routinely practiced in Tibet.

The UN Committee Against Torture has delivered a damning assessment of China's record on torture on 21 November 2008. The report revealed the drastically detiriorating record of abuse inside Tibet.
