Thank you for 2008

Free Tibet would like to thank all its supporters for their dedication during what was a crucial year for Tibet.

March 2008 saw the breakout of the largest demonstrations in Tibet since 1959, as peaceful protesters across the country went out in large numbers to show their opposition to Chinese rule.

April 2008 marked the Olympic Torch Relay, where thousands of supporters took to the streets to show their support of a free Tibet.

In May, our supporters signed a huge online petition, persuading UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown to meet the Dalai Lama during his visit to Britain.

In August, your support allowed us to highlight protests in Beijing and stimulate debate about human rights in Tibet.

And in November, your funding allowed us to present detailed evidence of torture in Tibet to the United Nations, who agreed with our conclusion that torture is 'widespread and routine' in Tibet, and that China must explain these failures.

So thank you to all our supporters, who joined Free Tibet, who wrote letters, signed petitions, held events, protested on the streets and donated to us in 2008. Your desire to see a free Tibet enabled us to demonstrate that far from fading away, the Tibetan cause is stronger than ever, and that with your support, we really can work towards a future where the rights and freedoms of the Tibetan people are respected.

Thank you for your support and happy new year from the Free Tibet team

The year ahead

With the 60th Anniversary of the invasion of Tibet taking place in 2009, we plan to make this coming year another successful one for the campaign, as we seek to underline the fact that despite six decades of oppression, Tibetans still dare to speak out against Chinese rule, and supporters across the world demand human rights and freedoms for the Tibetan people.

With your continued support, we will be working on many projects in 2009, including:

Anniversary year
With the 60th Anniversary of the invasion and the 50th of the 1959 uprising, we intend to highlight the fact that six decades has failed to supress the call for Tibetan freedom.

Remembering the 2008 uprising
We also aim to have the world talking about the March protests again, and will be working to get evidence out of Tibet should it be placed under lockdown.
