![]() Jigme Gyatso Following protests in Labrang, Gansu Province on 21 March 2008, Jigme Gyatso was arrested for his assumed role in the protests. Jigme (also known as Guri), is a 42-year-old monk from Labrang monastery. He was subjected to torture for more than a month. His injuries were so severe he had to be hospitalized for almost one month. On 3 September 2008 Jigme recorded on a camera his first hand account of the torture he suffered in detention. The video was released by Voice of America’s Tibetan service on www.youtube.com. Two days later the police launched a nationwide search for Jigme, who had already gone into hiding. He was re-arrested by approximately 70 armed police on 4 November 2008. He was held in detention for six months and was released in May 2009. Campaigning in his name by Free Tibet and its supporters helped prevent him from being tortured when he was re-arrested. ![]() “They would hang me up for several hours with my hands tied to a rope….. hanging from the ceiling and my feet above the ground. Then they would beat me on my face, chest, and back, with the full force of their fists. Finally, on one occasion, I had lost consciousness and was taken to a hospital. After I regained consciousness at the hospital, I was once again taken back to prison where they continued the practice of hanging me from the ceiling and beating me.” Watch Jigme Gyatso's testimony online (In Tibetan) and read his testimony in English. |
