Following international pressure, sources in China informed us that the planned road around Mount Kailash will not go ahead! Congratulations to all those who took part in the Urgent Campaign (14/11/03) that called on the Chinese authorities to stop any development in this area given its cultural and environmental significance. The campaign to get Mount Kailash declared a World Heritage site will continue in order to try and afford the area some protection against any such future development plans.
It has recently been confirmed that Namdrol Lhamo, one of the last remaining Drapchi 14 nuns, was released on 21 September 2003 after having served nearly 12 years in prison. She had originally been sentenced to six years for taking part in pro-independence demonstrations in Lhasa in 1992 and was given a six year sentence extension in 1993 when she joined 13 other nuns in making secret song recordings. Phuntsog Nyidrol is now the last of the Drapchi 14 nuns in prison and has served 15 years (she is not due for release til March 2005: click here for details on how to campaign on her behalf).
If you have not already, please consider joining our Urgent Campaign Scheme. The scheme is free to join by email, though contributions are appreciated. Please email paul@freetibet.org with your name and address, putting "Subscribe Urgent Campaign" in the subject.
