Tibet activist dies in tragic road accident while on "Walk for Tibet"

15 February 2011

Free Tibet is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Jigme K. Norbu during his long “Walk for Tibet”. Our deepest sympathies are with his family and friends at this time.

Jigme Norbu was on a 300-mile walk in Florida yesterday, 14 February 2011, when he was knocked down and killed by a passing car at approximately 7.30pm local time. The 45-year-old son of the Dalai Lama’s elder brother Takster Rinpoche, has walked many thousands of miles across the world in honour of the struggle for independence of fellow Tibetans in Tibet and to raise awareness of the Chinese occupation of Tibet.

Personal endeavours of the kind that Jigme undertook serve to shine a spotlight on the situation in Tibet; perhaps even more importantly, such acts of solidarity give Tibetans in Tibet great hope – that they are not alone, not forgotten, and that there are many, many people across the world who support their right to freedom. Jigme Norbu behind leaves a powerful and inspiring legacy.
