Free Tibet videos

Getting video footage out of Tibet is a huge challenge due to the regime's restrictions on access to such equipment and harsh punishments for anybody who attempts to share film of what is happening in Tibet with the outside world.
In this section you will find various peices of film and photo slideshows of Tibet, sourced by Free Tibet, including the 2008 ITV news report footage; the first footage to come out of Tibet of crackdowns in the country as supporters of the Dalai Lama celebrate his award of the US Congressional Gold Medal.

Lockdown in Tibet, 2009

Video news reports surrounding the fiftieth anniversary of the Tibetan uprising of 1959; March 2009 and the state of lockdown in Tibet.

Following the protests which spread across Tibet in spring 2008, the Chinese Government was shown to have increased the military lockdown in Tibet, creating a state of de facto martial law. The climate of fear and tension has been created to make Tibetans to feel intimidated and disuaded from protesting agasinst Chinese rule.

Around the world, Tibetans and their supporters gathered to mark fifty years of peaceful resistance in Tibet, and to demand that governments press for action to ensure that the human rights and freedoms of the Tibetan people are respected.

Wen Jiabao February 2009 visit: videos

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to the UK was met with protests by hundreds of pro-Tibet demonstrators who braved severe snows to make their opinions felt and demand freedom for the Tibetan people.

Premier Wen was greeted with protests at the Chinese Embassy on Sunday 1 February, and at the Natural History Museum later in the day, where he was making a speech. Five were arrested and released during the protests.

Olympic protests

The Beijing Games 2008 opened amid protests both within China and across the world. With all eyes on China, Tibet supporters staged a series of protests throughout the Games and shared footage of their demonstrations, which were picked up by the international media.

These protests ensured that as well as the sporting events, reporters were covering the issues of human rights and freedoms in Tibet and China during summer 2008.

 Videos from the Dalai Lama's 2008 tour of the UK

The Dalai Lama visited the UK in May 2008, giving talks in London, Nottingham and Oxford and meeting political leaders such as Prime Minister Gordon Brown and opposition leader David Cameron.

His Holiness' visit came in the wake of large scale protests in Tibet which were met with brutal crackdowns, and also in the aftermath of huge demonstrations in London and elsewhere on the route of the Beijing Olympic torch.

Tibet supporters across the world often stand up to voice their support for Tibetans and to join them in demanding freedom, as seen in these protest photos.

 

Following the Tibetan uprising of 2008, the Chinese authorities were keen to ensure that the fiftieth anniversary of the 1959 uprising passed quietly.
