Self-immolation and protests in new Tibetan prefecture
A monk in his 30s set fire to himself in La Township, Jyekundo Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture between 1 and 2pm local time on 8 February. At approximately 6pm, in the town of Ngaba another Tibetan set themselves on fire. The wellbeing and whereabouts of these Tibetans are unknown, but eyewitnesses reported in both cases that they were alive but in a serious condition when security personnel took them away.
Tibetan monks in Zathod Township, inspired by news they heard on the radio of global vigils for Tibet, took to the streets calling for the return of the Dalai Lama.
More than 40 Tibetans have now set themselves on fire in protest at the repressive Chinese occupation of their country. See the full list.
