UCS 28/07/06: No contract in Edinburgh for Bombardier |
No contract in Edinburgh for company facilitating China's occupation of Tibet! Your response has been overwhelming and we have received hundreds of responses from TIE to the letters you have written calling on TIE not to award a contract to a company which so openly colludes in China's illegal occupation of Tibet. The matter has become a public issue with the Edinburgh Evening News publishing an article on the controversial inclusion of Bombardier in the bidding process. It is clear that significant public opposition to a contract for Bombardier has been generated in Scotland and that such pressure is also being felt at a political level with many of you writing to MSPs and local councillors. Despite such pressure, TIE continues to assert merely that the tendering process "must take place under the rules of the European Union." Regard must also be shown, however, to the serious ethical concerns involved. With the decision on the contract imminent, it is now time to intensify the pressure on TIE not to award the contract to Bombardier and to demonstrate that collusion with China's policies in Tibet is bad for Bombardier's business and reputation. TAKE ACTION! We urge you to contact TIE making clear your opposition to any contract being awarded to a company so visibly connected to China's occupation of Tibet. Given the imminence of a decision we would ask you to fax, email or call TIE. If this is not possible, however, there is still time to write a letter to TIE. Mr Willie Gallagher, Chief Executive
Transport Initiatives for Edinburgh (TIE) is shortly to award the contract for the supply of tramcars for the new Edinburgh tramlines. On 18 May we wrote to you, asking that you show your opposition to Bombardier, the Canadian transportation multinational, being awarded the contract due to its involvement in the highly controversial Gormo-Lhasa Railway (a project which will strengthen Chin's grip over Tibet by linking China to Tibet by rail for the first time).
