Lobsang Dhondup Executed - Urgent Appeal

Latest News and Actions

On Monday 10 March 2003, Free Tibet Campaign is asking all its Urgent Campaign members to bombard the Chinese Embassy in London with emails, telephone calls or faxes, as part of an international campaign for Tibetan religious leader, Tenzin Deleg Rinpoche. Please join the campaign, and take the opportunity to express your outrage at the suspended death sentence against Tenzin Deleg Rinpoche and the execution of Lobsang Dhondup.

China has attempted to defend its actions in this case. Mr Lu Wenxiang, from the Chinese Embassy in London stated on 29 January that Tenzin Deleg Rinpoche and Lobsang Dhondup were"violent terrorist criminals". This was in response to the UK government's dismay, expressed in a statement on 28 January by Foreign Minister Bill Rammell MP. For the full response from Mr Lu Wenxiang go to www.chinese-embassy.org.uk/eng/41127.html. See below for suggested responses to this propaganda.

A death sentence continues to threaten Tenzin Deleg Rinpoche's life. Take action now!

Fax or email the Embassy, or telephone and ask to speak to the Ambassador, Mr. Zha Peixin (phonetic pronunciation Jar Pay shin) or Mr. Li Ruiyu (Lee Rway-yoo) Minister Counsellor to the Ambassador. Contact details are listed below. It is up to you whether you leave your name and contact details. Make the following points:

  • State your anger at the execution of Lobsang Dhondup. Ask where and at what time his execution took place.

  • Ask the Embassy to clarify the current whereabouts of Tenzin Deleg Rinpoche.

  • Ask for Tenzin Deleg Rinpoche to be released immediately. Express concerns that the original trials of Lobsang Dhondup and Tenzin Deleg Rinpoche were not held in accordance with international fair trial standards. Furthermore, that the second hearing was held in secret in early January with Tenzin Deleg Rinpoche prevented from using two experienced Beijing lawyers hired on his behalf by his brother.

  • Press for immediate guarantees for the safety of Tenzin Deleg Rinpoche. Urge that he be given immediate access to independent lawyers, medical personnel and his family.

    Suggested Responses:

  • If you are told that both Tibetans are guilty of terrorist offences, ask why there is no evidence apart from Lobsang Dhondup's 'confession' (which was later retracted)?

  • No evidence links Lobsang Dhondup with any death.

  • Why has no statement been issued describing the offences Tenzin Deleg Rinpoche is supposed to have committed?

  • Why is the 'primary' crime both Tibetans were convicted of listed as 'splittist activities?'

  • Why did the Supreme People's Court not review Lobsang Dhondup's case before he was executed?
