UCS 01/08/07: Urge Steven Spielberg to quit

Urge Spielberg to quit his role as Artistic Director of the Beijing Games

1 August 2007

Film director, Steven Spielberg, has publicly stated that he will decide in the next few weeks whether to resign from his high profile job as Artistic Director of the Beijing Olympics.

Spielberg has come under pressure to sever his involvement with the Chinese Games, now regularly referred to as 'The Genocide Olympics' by human rights movements because of China's involvement with Sudan's genocide. If Spielberg truly wishes to stop China from supporting genocide in Darfur, he must also work to end China's brutal oppression in Tibet.

China is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Tibetans and is actively seeking to destroy Tibet's unique culture and identity, leading to what the Dalai Lama has termed 'Cultural Genocide'.

"Our main interest is ending the genocide [in Sudan]. No one is clear on the best way to do this." said Spielberg's spokesperson.

Show him the best way to do it!

Demand that:

  • Spielberg resigns from his post immediately due to China's involvement in human rights abuses in Sudan AND Tibet.

The values of Olympism and basic human rights cannot be supported by working for a regime that brutally suppresses Tibetans.
  • Spielberg publicly urges China to end its occupation of Tibet
