Chinese Propaganda in the Herald Tribune

On the 60th anniversary of the forced surrender of Tibet's independence to China (23 May 2011), the International Herald Tribune which is the global edition of the New York Times carried an eight-page Chinese state-sponsored advertising supplement, part of China’s propaganda to sell to the world the idea that Tibetans are flourishing under Chinese rule. The inclusion of this ‘advertorial’ supplement in the IHT lent the propaganda included in its pages a veil of authenticity.

Stop Torture in Tibet

Torture is used by China as a weapon against dissent, creating a climate of fear.

Torture must stop.

To shine a spotlight on the widespread use of torture in Tibet British actors lent their voices to Tibetan torture survivors who can not speak out for themselves. Watch Dominic West, Juliet Stevenson and David Threlfall and listen to Alan  Rickman.

Free Political prisoners

Thousands of Tibetans have been arrested for 'political' activities which include peaceful acts such as printing the banned Tibetan national flag, calling for freedom in Tibet or emailing a friend about the situation in Tibet.

Many are tortured in detention, held without charge and without their families or lawyers having access to them. Others, who are sentenced are often given lengthy prison prison terms. International campaigning on their behalf can lead to better treatment in prison and in some cases to a reduction in sentences.

Support a US Consulate in Tibet

In 2009 the House of Representatives passed a bill which authorizes the establishment of a US Consulate in Tibet. The bill also allows for the creation of a "Tibet Section" to be created in the US embassy in Beijing. Together these two actions will strengthen US ties to the Tibetan people and keep a closer eye on Chinese human rights abuses. Please write to your Senator now and show your support for this bill which still has not been passed.
