Take action for Guri Jigme |
15 February 2012
Fears are growing for the well-being of Lama Jigme Gyatso (also known as Guri), a senior monk from Labrang monastery, Gansu Province, who was detained for the fourth time in August 2011.
He has been charged with splittist activties and is awaiting sentencing.
Fourth detention
This is Lama Jigme’s fourth period of imprisonment in the last five years. During his detention in 2008, he was hospitalised for treatment of injuries sustained during torture.
He was detained for a further six months without charge after making a video documenting his ordeal and providing testimony of the wider crackdown in Tibet.
Previous success
Our campaign to expose the abuse of fundamental human rights and ensure this courageous man’s release was integral to the good treatment he experienced during his second period in jail and to his release.
That’s why we are again asking you to speak out for Lama Jigme Gyatso. Your voice really does make a difference.
Action
Write to the Party Secretary of Gansu Province and/or the Chinese Representative in the UK, calling for Lama Jigme Gyatso’s release.
“I am writing to express my deep concern for the welfare of Lama Jigme Gyatso (Ch: 久美果日), the Tibetan monk detained on 20 August 2011 from his hotel room in Gansu Province. I urge you to immediately and unconditionally release him and/or provide detailed information on his well-being and the reasons for his arrest.”
