Success! Foreign Secretary makes statement in Beijing on human rights in Tibet

The Foreign Secretary stated at a press conference in Beijing that London has "long standing human rights concerns" over Tibet. He also said: " We want to see long-term stability for Tibet which in our view implies work on human rights and greater autonomy".

Send Mr Hague a thank you card or an email message through the Foreign and Commonwealth Office weblink.

Original Urgent Campaign - 9 July

The new UK Foreign Secretary is to visit China on 14 July.  Call on him to raise human rights publicly in Beijing.

The coalition government has pledged in its manifesto to “seek closer engagement with China, while standing firm on human rights.” The Foreign Secretary must honour his commitment and make a public statement in China on human rights.

In his speech announcing the new government’s foreign policy vision on 1 July Mr. Hague said that the UK must be “. . . resolute in its support for those around the world who are striving to free themselves . . . ,” and also that UK foreign policy must be accountable to the British people. Tibetans have been struggling for freedom for decades – let Mr. Hague know you demand he keep his word.

Act now to hold the coalition government accountable:

Dear Foreign Secretary

During your visit in China,  I urge you to make a public statement of concern over human rights in Tibet while you are in China.

The coalition government has pledged in its manifesto that it will, “seek closer engagement with China, while standing firm on human rights.” In your foreign policy vision you said that the UK must be “. . . resolute in its support for those around the world who are striving to free themselves.”

As a supporter of  Free Tibet, I ask you to keep your word by making a public statement regarding human rights in Tibet during your visit in China.

Silence is consent to the everyday crimes the Chinese government commits in Tibet.

Yours sincerely
