Jamyang Tenzin
According to the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD), a 35-year-old monk from Yonru Geden Rabgayling monastery in Kardze was sentenced to three years' imprisonment for refusing to take part in a 'patriotic re-education' session designed to pressure monks into denouncing the Dalai Lama.
Jamyang Tenzin was reportedly arrested on 3 October 2007 and not sentenced until 3 July 2009.
On October 2007, Chinese authorities summoned the monks and abbot of the Youru Geydenling Monastery to conduct a ‘patriotic education’ session. During the session, a monk called Jamyang Tenzin challenged officials by saying;
"The Chinese government's proclamation of right to religious freedom enjoyed by the Tibetan people is contradictory as we cannot place a portrait of His Holiness the Dalai Lama at our residence and monastery. The people of Lithang County including its' nomads still continue to face livelihood problems although government boast of rapid development."
He also raised questions on the arrest of Runggye Adak and other Tibetans, expressing his concern of their whereabouts. He concluded by shouting "May the Dalai Lama live for thousands of years”.
According to TCHRD, at around 3 July 2009, Jamyang Tenzin of Yonru Geden Rabgayling Monastery was sentenced by the Kardze Inermediate Peoples court to three years in jail. The court said that he had been arrested on 3 October 2007 for opposing the “work team” from conducting “Patriotic re-education” at the Yonru Monastery Lithang County.
Jamyang's lengthy detention in October 2007 from his detention until his court sentence in July 2009, is a matter of great concern and is a clear violation of the Chinese constitution and international law. There is hardly any information available over the circumstances under which he was tried, or if he was provided with the legal representative of his choice. His family were not told of his whereabouts for 12 months, another violation of Chinese and international law regarding informing families of arrests and sentencing.
The “patriotic education” campaign was released in all monastic institutions in Lithang County after protests in 2007, and began in September that year. The campaign lasted three months, and required that monks and nuns write essays denouncing the Dalai Lama and demonstrating their allegiance to the Chinese government.
Following Jamyang's protest, PSB officials arrested him as soon as the Patriotic education session was over at the monastery.
Jamyang had visited India in 1995 to study at the Gaden Jangtse Monastery, but returned to Tibet in 2004.
There are grave concerns for Jamyang's welfare given the notorious use of torture in Tibet's dentention centres and prisons.
